Apprentices work and train at the same time so that they can learn the skills and expertise needed for their chosen craft.
This involves alternating between off-the-job training (block release) in an education centre and on-the-job training at your workplace.
Training for craft apprenticeships takes 4 years, during which time you will spend 3 different periods in off-the-job training.
You begin Phase 1 in the workplace and then move to Phase 2 in an education facility. Thereafter, training alternates between the workplace and an education facility.
The skills you develop will be assessed through assessment of on-the-job competence as well as off-the-job modular assessment and examinations.
Once you successfully complete your apprenticeship, you will be awarded a Level 6 Advanced Certificate – Craft (National Framework of Qualifications) awarded by SOLAS.
This award is both nationally and internationally recognised
SOLAS is responsible, nationwide, for delivering apprenticeship training in Ireland.
